Kevin Costner invites you to experience the history before Hickock. Inspired by his time with the Lakota People while filming “Dances with Wolves”, Ta’Tanka focuses on the symbiotic relationship between the Lakota Nation and the North American Plains Bison.

The centerpiece of Ta’Tanka is the 3rd largest bronze sculpture in the world.  It is composed of a total of 17 pieces: 14 bison being pursued by three Lakota riders on bareback. These figures artfully depict the earliest and most effective form of hunting bison called a bison jump.

From their beginnings at Wind Cave through the eradication of the bison and into the present day, our museum tells the story of resilience, rebirth, and perseverance of not just an animal, but also a culture.

Our gift shop specializes in Lakota-made, local-made, and Native American owned companies. Check out our one-of-a-kind art and jewelry. Our local South Dakota wines and made-just-for-Ta’Tanka chokecherry products are a great taste of South Dakota to take home.
